This article details the various ways customers can checkout on the Mashgin Self Checkout Kiosk, common user mistakes, and some basic troubleshooting tips!
Ways to Checkout
- Packaged Goods
- Open Plated Items
- Aruco Codes (Dotcodes)
- QR Codes
- Age Restricted Items
Common Customer Mistakes
-
Stacking Items
- You may see customers stack their items on the base, thinking that the kiosk measures the weight of the items, however the kiosk needs to be able to fully see each item to visually recognize it
- Have customers unstack items and place them well separated on the base
-
Placing Personal Items on Base
- Customers may place personal items, such as a wallet, keys, or a phone, on the base of the kiosk during checkout and cause the kiosk to attempt to visually recognize the item
- Remind customers to place their personal belongings on the side instead of directly on the base
-
Removing Item Before Payment
- If a customer removes the item before paying, the kiosk will remove that item from the checkout cart
- Remind customers to not pull any items off of the base until the payment is completed and the kiosk prompts them to remove their items
-
Placing Oversized Items First on Base
- It is best practice to place all smaller items on the base before attempting to place large oversized items
- If the oversized item is too large, have the customer scan the barcode of the item and place off to the side
- Please see Functional Tags for more details
-
Placing Items Too Close to Each Other
- If customers place items too close together, the kiosk may have a difficult time being able to accurately recognize each item
- Have customers place items well separated on the base
-
Removing Card Too Quickly
- When customers remove their card too quickly from the payment reader, the transaction will not complete
- Remind customers to follow the instructions on the card reader

Troubleshooting Best Practices
-
Invalid Code Scanned
- If an item is visually recognized when placed on the base, but not when scanning it's barcode, the item may not have the correct barcode format within the menu
- Please see Invalid Code Scanned for more details
-
Aruco Code (Dotcode) Not Recognized
- When an item that has an aruco code, or dotcode, is placed on the base and is not being recognized, then the item is not properly configured
- Please see What is an Aruco Code (Dotcode)? for more details
-
What's This?
- If an item prompts the What's This message when placed on the base, the item may not exist within your menu
- Please see How to Add New Menu Items via Kiosk UI and How to Add New Menu Items via Creator for more details
-
Incorrect Pricing
- If an item shows up in checkout with the incorrect pricing, the item's price can be edited within your menu
- Please see How to Edit Existing Menu Items for more details
-
Unable to Add Item
- When scanning a barcode within Manager Mode, the message "Item creation from kiosk is disabled for this client" appears, then your location most likely has a menu integration in place -- therefore, you will not be able to add items via the kiosk
- Please contact your menu administrator for any needed menu changes
-
QR Code Label Not Recognized
- If a QR code is not recognized when placed on top of an item on the base, then the item is not properly configured
- Please see Troubleshooting QR Code Labels for more details
